Petition for a War Emissions Trading Scheme

To the United Nations and Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, with regards to the introduction of a worldwide carbon tax and Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS).

We, the undersigned, believe there should be a specialized carbon tax applied to all armed conflicts, acts of terrorism and wars around the world, including war games, military training exercises and weapons testing, to be administered under a legally binding War Emissions Trading Scheme (WETS).
Though the current ETS may apply to the manufacturing process of weapons, munitions and military hardware, we believe a WETS should apply to their destructive use to compensate for the environmental impact of war. Taking into account the damage inflicted to land, forest, ocean and wildlife as well as the greenhouse gases emitted. For an approximate example: 1 Tomahawk missile fired and exploded would cost a minimum of 10,000 trees planted, which would increase depending upon the destruction caused by the bomb. Because of the secretive nature of warfare a WETS should also compensate for undisclosed weapons testing and military operations.

A War Emissions Trading Scheme should, without discrimination, be imposed upon every country, army, group or corporation involved in war. Including, but not exclusive to, the Coalition of the Willing, UN Peacekeeping Forces, NATO, terrorist organizations, private security firms, weapons manufacturers and arms dealers.
Similar to the ETS, a WETS should also rise in cost over time making it increasingly expensive for warring factions, and those in the business of war, to degrade the environment. The potential of a WETS is that war could be priced out of existence thereby helping the United Nations fulfill its vision of ending armed conflicts around the world whilst also decreasing the human induced side of climate change.

We believe the funds raised from a WETS should go towards projects such as the restoration of forest and wildlife habitat, endangered species protection, renewable energy projects and sustainable community development.

We the undersigned ask you to sign our petition.
